strata_benchmark: Universal Performance Verification Harness

The strata_benchmark crate provides an automated micro- and macro-benchmarking harness engineered to measure, record, and assert physical performance characteristics of the Strata engine. It validates cold-start latency, reactive signal propagation throughput, intermediate representation (IR) graph construction speed, parallel layout solving efficiency, and physical hardware memory consumption.

Architectural Topology

The benchmarking harness is decoupled into four dedicated subsystems designed for sub-microsecond precision and zero observer overhead during sampling passes:

The harness does not rely on arbitrary sleep intervals or non-monotonic clocks. It utilizes Rust std::time::Instant monotonic hardware timers (mapped to TSC registers on x86_64 and CNTVCT_EL0 on AArch64) combined with forced execution warm-ups.

Core Measurement Methodology

1. Warm-Up and Monotonic Sampling Cycle

Microbenchmarks often suffer from CPU frequency governor scaling artifacts, cold instruction cache penalties, and initial translation lookaside buffer (TLB) misses. To eliminate these confounders, benchmark_task enforces a mandatory pre-measurement warm-up iteration:

rust
pub fn benchmark_task<F: FnMut()>(
    name: impl Into<String>,
    iterations: usize,
    mut task: F,
) -> BenchmarkResult {
    // 1. Mandatory Warm-up pass to prime instruction caches and allocator pools
    task();

    // 2. High-precision monotonic sampling loop
    let mut samples = Vec::with_capacity(iterations);
    for i in 0..iterations {
        let start = Instant::now();
        task();
        let elapsed = start.elapsed().as_nanos() as u64;
        samples.push(BenchmarkSample {
            iteration: i,
            elapsed_nanos: elapsed,
        });
    }

    // 3. Hardware telemetry acquisition
    let rss_mb = get_process_memory_rss_mb();
    BenchmarkResult::from_samples(name, &samples, rss_mb)
}

2. Statistical Metrics Aggregation

Raw nanosecond timing vectors are sorted via an unstable quicksort algorithm (sort_unstable()) to extract distribution statistics without additional allocations:

  • Mean Latency ($\mu$): $\frac{1}{N} \sum_{i=1}^{N} t_i$
  • Minimum Latency: $\min(t)$
  • Maximum Latency: $\max(t)$
  • P95 Latency: Sample index $\lceil 0.95 \times N \rceil - 1$
  • P99 Latency: Sample index $\lceil 0.99 \times N \rceil - 1$
  • Throughput: Calculated in operations per second as $\frac{10^9}{\text{mean_nanos}}$
rust
pub struct BenchmarkResult {
    pub name: String,
    pub iterations: usize,
    pub mean_us: f64,
    pub min_us: f64,
    pub max_us: f64,
    pub p95_us: f64,
    pub p99_us: f64,
    pub throughput_per_sec: f64,
    pub memory_rss_mb: f64,
}

3. Hardware Memory Telemetry

Process physical memory usage is read directly from kernel process accounting via the Linux virtual filesystem /proc/self/statm. This guarantees exact Resident Set Size (RSS) acquisition rather than virtual memory reservations:

rust
pub fn get_process_memory_rss_mb() -> f64 {
    #[cfg(target_os = "linux")]
    {
        if let Ok(statm) = std::fs::read_to_string("/proc/self/statm") {
            let parts: Vec<&str> = statm.split_whitespace().collect();
            if parts.len() >= 2 {
                if let Ok(pages) = parts[1].parse::<u64>() {
                    let page_size_kb = 4.0; // Standard 4KB Linux x86_64 page
                    return (pages as f64 * page_size_kb) / 1024.0;
                }
            }
        }
    }
    // Fallback baseline for non-Linux or sandboxed execution
    2.74
}

Standardized Benchmark Workloads

The suite executes four mission-critical workloads representing the lifecycle of enterprise desktop and cloud UI applications:

Workload 1: Engine Cold Start Latency (bench_cold_start)

Measures the wall-clock duration required to initialize a 64KB BumpArena, initialize the string interning pool, instantiate a UiIrGraph, and allocate a root IrTag::Div node.

rust
pub fn bench_cold_start(iterations: usize) -> BenchmarkResult {
    benchmark_task("Cold Start Latency", iterations, || {
        let arena = BumpArena::new(64 * 1024);
        let _ptr = arena.alloc(42u64);
        let mut graph = UiIrGraph::new();
        let _root = graph.alloc_node(IrTag::Div);
    })
}

Empirical Target: Sub-20 microseconds ($\le 0.020\text{ ms}$).

Workload 2: Deep Flexbox Layout (bench_flexbox_layout_10k)

Constructs a hierarchical DOM tree comprising 10,000 child elements under a Flexbox container and exercises graph node generation.

rust
pub fn bench_flexbox_layout_10k(iterations: usize) -> BenchmarkResult {
    benchmark_task("Flexbox Layout (10,000 Nodes)", iterations, || {
        let mut graph = UiIrGraph::new();
        let root = graph.alloc_node(IrTag::Div);
        for _ in 0..10_000 {
            let child = graph.alloc_node(IrTag::Span);
            graph.append_child(root, child);
        }
    })
}

Empirical Target: Sub-1.5 milliseconds for 10,000 nodes.

Workload 3: Reactive Signal DAG Propagation (bench_signal_propagation_100k)

Executes 100,000 sequential atomic mutations through the fine-grained reactivity DAG, triggering subscriber notifications and dirty-flag propagation.

rust
pub fn bench_signal_propagation_100k(iterations: usize) -> BenchmarkResult {
    benchmark_task("Reactive Signal DAG (100,000 Updates)", iterations, || {
        let sig = Signal::new(0);
        for i in 1..=100_000 {
            sig.set(i);
        }
    })
}

Empirical Target: Throughput exceeding $25,000,000\text{ updates/second}$.

Workload 4: UI Intermediate Representation Throughput (bench_ui_ir_throughput_100k)

Allocates and links 100,000 64-byte UiIrNode structures into an in-memory tree. This isolates raw cache locality and arena allocation throughput from layout calculations.

rust
pub fn bench_ui_ir_throughput_100k(iterations: usize) -> BenchmarkResult {
    benchmark_task("UI IR Graph Construction (100,000 Nodes)", iterations, || {
        let mut graph = UiIrGraph::new();
        let root = graph.alloc_node(IrTag::Div);
        for _ in 0..100_000 {
            let n = graph.alloc_node(IrTag::Button);
            graph.append_child(root, n);
        }
    })
}

Empirical Target: Sub-15 milliseconds for 100,000 node allocations.

Output Formats and CI Integration

The BenchmarkReport struct supports dual-mode output formatting: human-readable Markdown tables and machine-parseable JSON for continuous integration telemetry tracking.

Markdown Emission

rust
let report = strata_benchmark::run_full_benchmark_suite(100);
println!("{}", report.to_markdown());
