strata_charts: High-Performance SVG & GPU Data Visualization Engine

The strata_charts crate provides a pure-Rust, zero-DOM data visualization engine designed for the Strata framework. Engineered as a high-throughput equivalent to Recharts, Visx, and D3, strata_charts computes mathematical coordinate transformations, SVG geometric path descriptions, and GPU vertex batches for real-time telemetry streaming, latency percentile distributions, and cluster resource observability.

Architectural Principles

Data visualization in Strata separates mathematical domain projection from rasterization:

  1. Deterministic Coordinate Math: Continuous numeric domains and discrete categorical bands map to physical logical pixels with subpixel precision.
  2. Zero Allocation Rendering: Point arrays translate directly into SVG path strings (M, L, Z) or flat vertex buffers without intermediary DOM node overhead.
  3. High-Frequency Telemetry: Capable of processing 100,000+ data points at 120 FPS for live telemetry oscilloscopes and CPU load traces.

Coordinate Scales

Continuous Linear Scale: ScaleLinear

Maps a continuous numerical domain $[D_{\min}, D_{\max}]$ onto a physical pixel coordinate range $[R_{\min}, R_{\max}]$:

$$f(x) = R_{\min} + \frac{x - D_{\min}}{D_{\max} - D_{\min}} \cdot (R_{\max} - R_{\min})$$

rust
use strata_charts::prelude::ScaleLinear;

// Map metric range 0.0 to 100.0% CPU to pixel height 300.0 down to 0.0 (inverted Y-axis)
let y_scale = ScaleLinear::new((0.0, 100.0), (300.0, 0.0));

assert_eq!(y_scale.map(0.0), 300.0);   // Bottom baseline
assert_eq!(y_scale.map(50.0), 150.0);  // Midpoint
assert_eq!(y_scale.map(100.0), 0.0);   // Top ceiling

// Coordinate inversion (e.g. pointer hover lookup)
assert_eq!(y_scale.invert(150.0), 50.0);

// Generate 5 evenly spaced axis ticks
let ticks = y_scale.ticks(5);
assert_eq!(ticks, vec![0.0, 25.0, 50.0, 75.0, 100.0]);

API Reference: ScaleLinear

MethodParametersReturn TypeDescription
new(domain, range)((f32, f32), (f32, f32))SelfInstantiates scale with source domain and target pixel range.
map(value)f32f32Projects a domain value into pixel coordinate space.
invert(coord)f32f32Inverts a pixel coordinate back to the corresponding domain value.
ticks(count)usizeVec<f32>Computes count uniform reference values for grid lines and labels.

Categorical Band Scale: ScaleBand

Distributes discrete categorical entities uniformly across a physical range with configurable inter-band padding ratios:

rust
use strata_charts::prelude::ScaleBand;

let regions = vec![
    "us-east-1".to_string(),
    "us-west-2".to_string(),
    "eu-central-1".to_string(),
    "ap-southeast-1".to_string(),
];

// Map 4 regions across 800px width with 20% inter-bar padding
let x_scale = ScaleBand::new(regions, (0.0, 800.0), 0.2);

let bar_width = x_scale.bandwidth(); // Width allocated to each individual bar
assert_eq!(bar_width, 160.0);        // (800 / 4) * (1.0 - 0.2)

let x_pos = x_scale.map("eu-central-1").expect("Region exists in domain");
assert_eq!(x_pos, 420.0);

API Reference: ScaleBand

MethodParametersReturn TypeDescription
new(domain, range, padding)(Vec<String>, (f32, f32), f32)SelfInstantiates band scale with clamped padding $[0.0, 1.0]$.
bandwidth()Nonef32Physical pixel width of each categorical slot.
map(item)&strOption<f32>Starting X-offset for the specified category slot.

Path Geometry Generators

Line Path Generator: line_path

Constructs an optimized SVG path string connecting sequential coordinate points:

rust
use strata_charts::prelude::line_path;

let points = vec![
    (0.0, 120.0),
    (100.0, 80.0),
    (200.0, 150.0),
    (300.0, 45.0),
];

let d = line_path(&points);
assert_eq!(d, "M 0.00 120.00 L 100.00 80.00 L 200.00 150.00 L 300.00 45.00");

Area Path Generator: area_path

Generates closed polygon geometries for gradient-filled area charts by extending the line path downwards to a common horizontal baseline:

rust
use strata_charts::prelude::area_path;

let points = vec![
    (0.0, 120.0),
    (100.0, 80.0),
    (200.0, 150.0),
];
let baseline_y = 200.0;

let d = area_path(&points, baseline_y);
assert_eq!(d, "M 0.00 120.00 L 100.00 80.00 L 200.00 150.00 L 200.00 200.00 L 0.00 200.00 Z");

Categorical Bar Rectangles: bar_rects

Calculates exact bounding rectangles (x, y, width, height) for single or multi-series bar charts:

rust
use strata_charts::prelude::{bar_rects, ScaleBand, ScaleLinear};

let categories = vec!["auth-service", "billing-worker", "telemetry-collector"];
let error_counts = vec![12.0, 85.0, 4.0];

let x_scale = ScaleBand::new(
    categories.iter().map(|s| s.to_string()).collect(),
    (0.0, 600.0),
    0.25,
);
let y_scale = ScaleLinear::new((0.0, 100.0), (300.0, 0.0));

let rects = bar_rects(&categories, &error_counts, &x_scale, &y_scale);
assert_eq!(rects.len(), 3);

for (x, y, width, height) in rects {
    println!("Bar rect: x={x}, y={y}, w={width}, h={height}");
}
