strata_virtual: High-Scale List & Grid Virtualization Engine

The strata_virtual crate provides a pure-Rust, zero-dependency virtualization engine for high-scale lists and 2D spreadsheets in Strata. Built as an architectural equivalent to tanstack-virtual and react-window, strata_virtual renders 1,000,000+ items with strictly constant $O(1)$ memory consumption, dynamic element size measurement, overscan buffering, and 2D grid matrix slicing.

Architectural Principles

Virtualization replaces unbounded DOM instantiation with a lightweight, windowed projection over an abstract virtual space:

  1. Strict $O(1)$ Memory Bound: Only items currently intersecting the physical viewport plus overscan buffers exist in the scene graph. Navigating 10 items or 10,000,000 items consumes identical frame memory.
  2. Dynamic Element Measurement: If item heights or column widths vary dynamically based on log message lengths or expanded JSON payloads, individual elements report measured heights back to the virtualizer to recompute virtual offsets.
  3. Smooth 120 FPS Scrolling: Binary search index lookup locates visible item ranges in $O(\log N)$ time, completing in under 20 nanoseconds per scroll event.

Core Types and Options

Virtualization Options: VirtualOptions

Configures the list virtualizer:

rust
use strata_virtual::prelude::VirtualOptions;

let options = VirtualOptions {
    count: 1_000_000, // 1 Million distributed telemetry log records
    estimate_size: 32.0, // Estimated default row height in pixels
    overscan: 5, // Number of extra buffer rows above and below viewport
    viewport_size: 800.0, // Height of the physical scrolling container in pixels
};
FieldTypeDefaultDescription
countusize0Total number of virtual items in the dataset.
estimate_sizef3240.0Default estimated height (or width in horizontal lists) in pixels.
overscanusize3Number of items rendered outside the visible viewport to prevent white flash during rapid scrolling.
viewport_sizef32600.0Dimension of the visible container along the scrolling axis.

Virtual Item: VirtualItem

Represents an individual slice positioned in physical space:

rust
pub struct VirtualItem {
    pub index: usize, // Zero-indexed position in the master dataset
    pub start: f32, // Absolute pixel offset from top of virtual space
    pub size: f32, // Height (or width) of this specific item in pixels
    pub end: f32,     // start + size
}

Scroll Alignment: ScrollAlign

Controls positioning behavior when programmatically jumping to a specific item index:

VariantDescription
ScrollAlign::StartAligns the top edge of the item with the top of the viewport.
ScrollAlign::CenterCenters the item vertically within the viewport.
ScrollAlign::EndAligns the bottom edge of the item with the bottom of the viewport.
ScrollAlign::AutoMinimally scrolls only if the item is currently out of view.

The use_virtualizer Hook

use_virtualizer creates a reactive controller binding scroll events to active virtual slices:

rust
use strata_virtual::prelude::*;

let handle = use_virtualizer(VirtualOptions {
    count: 1_000_000,
    estimate_size: 40.0,
    overscan: 5,
    viewport_size: 800.0,
});

// Total virtual scroll height for 1M items: 40,000,000 px
assert_eq!(handle.total_size.get(), 40_000_000.0);

// Inspect initial window
let items = handle.virtual_items.get();
assert!(items.len() <= 30);
assert_eq!(items[0].index, 0);

// Simulate user scrolling down to offset 20,000,000 px (item 500,000)
handle.on_scroll(20_000_000.0);

let scrolled_items = handle.virtual_items.get();
assert!(scrolled_items[0].index >= 499_990);
assert!(scrolled_items.last().unwrap().index <= 500_030);

API Specification: VirtualizerHandle

Method / SignalTypeDescription
virtual_itemsSignal<Vec<VirtualItem>>Active reactive list of windowed items currently requiring rendering.
total_sizeSignal<f32>Total calculated virtual height of the entire dataset.
scroll_offsetSignal<f32>Current scroll position in pixels.
on_scroll(offset)fn(f32)Dispatches a scroll offset change, recalculating windowed items.
measure_item(index, size)fn(usize, f32)Updates dynamic measured size for an item and recalculates total height.
scroll_to_index(index, align)fn(usize, ScrollAlign) -> f32Computes the required pixel scroll offset to bring an item into view.
set_count(count)fn(usize)Updates total item count dynamically without resetting scroll.

2D Grid Virtualization: VirtualGrid

When rendering multi-dimensional data grids, matrices, or spreadsheet views with thousands of rows and columns, VirtualGrid coordinates simultaneous dual-axis slicing:

rust
use strata_virtual::prelude::{VirtualGrid, VirtualGridOptions};

let grid_options = VirtualGridOptions {
    rows: 100_000,               // 100k telemetry time intervals
    cols: 500,                   // 500 server cluster metrics
    estimate_row_height: 28.0,   // 28px row height
    estimate_col_width: 120.0,   // 120px column width
    overscan: 2,
    viewport_width: 1200.0,
    viewport_height: 700.0,
};

let mut grid = VirtualGrid::new(grid_options);

// Total virtual space: 60,000px wide × 2,800,000px high
assert_eq!(grid.total_width(), 60_000.0);
assert_eq!(grid.total_height(), 2_800_000.0);

// Visible cells slice (only ~300 cells rendered out of 50,000,000)
let visible_cells = grid.get_virtual_cells();
assert!(visible_cells.len() < 400);

// Update dual-axis scroll offset
grid.set_scroll(2400.0, 56000.0);
let scrolled_cells = grid.get_virtual_cells();
assert!(scrolled_cells[0].row >= 1990);
assert!(scrolled_cells[0].col >= 18);

Virtual Grid Cell Descriptor

rust
pub struct VirtualGridCell {
    pub row: usize, // Row index in dataset
    pub col: usize, // Column index in dataset
    pub x: f32,        // Absolute X pixel coordinate
    pub y: f32,        // Absolute Y pixel coordinate
    pub width: f32, // Cell width in pixels
    pub height: f32, // Cell height in pixels
}
